Am curious what's required for smb2j thing. I think for smb1 could maybe be done in 7-2 after doing the 2 player vine spawn glitch

probably, the bug is there in smb1, smb2j and ANN, so probably VS as well. might be more likely to just crash depending on how it handles executing bad code.

in the NES there's something called an IRQ interrupt, which is when the hardware tries to interrupt the game to do something else. in smb1 that never happens, so they haven't handled it, but on smb1j and 2j the FDS bios always handles those things for the disk drive interrupts and things.

yeah for smb1 if we did find something, instead of going to the end screen we'd need to trigger the axe cutscene

which we can do in 2j as well. but it's hard to survive that in the spot where the glitch happens in 2j. :)

yeah you need to fill all but 1 enemy slot, and then spawn the long firebar or bowser

this crash is definitely not pleasant to work with, only works in underwater levels, so that limits it to 3. (edited)

just the ending that's still very hard. but the instructions i'm using also aren't the best for it, just that it was relatively easy to code it with fireballs because of the level layout.

ahh. some person on twitter complained that their game crashed a few weeks ago. then that got posted to the discord a couple of days ago. Simplistic checked what had happened and saw that it was executing code from RAM. Then someone wrote to me about it, found a way for it to execute a two-byte instruction from the controller, and then found a few sets of states to try to create in order to jump to the credits.
